Update: HB 3227 did not pass Senate

HB 3227, the bill calling for eating disorders to be added to the list of serious mental illnesses requiring health insurance coverage in the state of Texas, did not make it through the Senate last week.

Thank you to all who participated in getting the bill through the House, as this was a difficult task. Your phone calls, office visits, testimonies, emails and letters were very influential. Most of the Legislature is now familiar with the issue and the bill. In fact, the majority of the House and Senate were very supportive of the bill, we simply ran out of time. This will be beneficial when we try to pass the bill again during the next legislative session in 2015.

Also because of your support of HB 3227, there seems to be a greater awareness of eating disorders in Texas communities. In particular, the Austin Foundation for Eating Disorders (AFED), has experienced an increase in emails and requests for help after hearing about the foundation through this process.

If you'd like to be a part of the AFED advocacy committee, please send an email to Volunteer@austinfed.org. If you'd like to be added to the AFED mailing list, email them at hope@austinfed.org.

See you in 2015!
