Fat Talk Free Awareness Week is here! October 22-26, 2012

One of my favorite awareness weeks is here! Fat Talk Free® week, launched by Tri Delta in 2008, is an international, body activism campaign. The awareness campaign is meant to raise awareness about body image issues and the damaging impact of the "thin ideal" on women in society.

What is Fat Talk?

Fat Talk describes all of the statements made in everyday conversation that can contribute to body dissatisfaction, poor body image, and low self-esteem by reinforcing the thin ideal standard of beauty.

Examples of Fat Talk include statements like:

“I’m so fat,” “Do I look fat in this?” “I need to lose 10 pounds” and “She’s too fat to be wearing that swimsuit.”

Statements that are considered fat talk don’t necessarily have to be negative; they can seem positive yet also reinforce the need to be thin. For example, “You look great! Have you lost weight?”
